Today I registered for VMworld EU 2018, which runs November 5-9 in Barcelona
As a VMware partner, CAM is able to take along some of our customers, at no cost to them. Every year we try to ‘buddy’ up our own engineers with the engineers and architects of our customers. This is not only a great way of further developing the relationships we have, but going to sessions together, and pulling the customer along to other fun or interesting events in and around VMworld, is a great conversation starter and way to build awareness.
Personally, I see VMworld more as a networking event and an opportunity to get the ‘inside scoop’ on many VMware products and developments.
So sessions for me, are secondary, especially considering most are recorded and can be watched online afterwards (even on Youtube, these days)
Despite that, I always try to catch some sessions live, especially if know beforehand the content is going to be good or there are specific people I want to see present.
I am certainly not the only one posting about this. If you want to see other great suggestions for VMworld, check out these blog posts:
And listen to the this great Community Roundtable podcast episode:
Here are my favorites for this year, ordered by topic.
The Extreme Performance Series is always of very high quality. If you see this term, its probably worth going to.
Extreme Performance Series: vSphere PMEM = Storage at Memory Speed [VIN2183BE]
Extreme Performance Series: Performance Best Practices [VIN2677BE]
A special shout out is in order here. ‘Extreme Performance Series: Performance Best Practices’ is co-presented by Valentin Bondzio (@vBondzio), who I have worked with in the past on performance troubleshooting cases. He is an amazing engineer and a fantastic presenter, this session will be high-energy and high-content and I cannot recommend it enough!
vSphere Performance Troubleshooting and Root Cause Analysis (Compute) [VIN1372BE] (with the amazing and extremely knowledgeable @RebeccaFitzhugh )
I already know a lot about vSAN, but next steps we are getting into with customers revolve around performance, scaling and for our own deployments, automation.
New Ways to Use vRealize Operations and Log Insight for vSAN Environments [HCI1477BE]
Optimizing vSAN for Performance [HCI1246BE]
Getting Started with vSAN Automation [HCI2522BE] ( couldn’t possibly miss a session that was co hosted by these 2 giants of the community @alanrenouf and @lamw )
Not having hardcore networking in my background still presents challenges for me, so I try to grab any opportunity to refresh things like core routing and switching.
Micro-segmentation with the DFW is my own hobby-horse, so any session that can add to my insights here is always good.

Best Practices for Virtual Networking (GSS Best Practices) [VIN2949BE]
Securing Horizon and Citrix End-User Computing with NSX Data Center [SAI1851BE]
Eventually NSX-V and T will collape into a single product, and it will be more like NSX-T then NSX-V. So these sessions are a great head start. I am also interested in NSX-T because it is the natural companion to containers and PKS, and NSX-Cloud is more like NSX-T than NSX-V

Containers en Kubernetes/KPS/NSX-T
I love containers and container orchestration as a technology and concept. Most applications and services will end up being served up in this way.

HCX / VMware Cloud on AWS
I already know a lot about the VMware Cloud on AWS offering, so many of the introductory sessions at VMworld are not for me this year. However HCX represents the ‘glue’ you need to do real hybrid cloud.
